Secure Your Workplace and Home NowJul 06, 2021
Anchorage, Alaska was hit by a 7.0M earthquake. I learned of the earthquake shortly after it hit and took to Facebook messenger to see if a friend was impacted. After about 15-minutes, I received a response from my friend indicating that she was good and that their home had suffered no damage.
She went on to indicate that she had checked her furnace and there was no leak. She shared that they lost power and that her cell phone wasn't working initially, although it came back quickly. She described the shaking as "jarring" and later shared with a friend, that introduced us years ago, that it felt like someone had picked up the house and slammed it back down. Miraculously, they had no damage at all. The same couldn't be said for the bar where she works or for her sister's or mother's homes. The pictures below clearly reveal what can happen if items are unsecured. The top two pictures are from the bar where my friend works. The pictures that follow are from her sister and mom depicting the damage that was done at their homes. We share these images with you to motivate you to take action NOW! Take a tour of all the spaces you spend your time (home, work, etc.) and look for heavy objects, valuable items, tall furniture, pictures hung on walls and other items that could fall upon someone, block an exit or destroy something valuable. Once you have identified the objects secure them. Pay particular attention to your kitchen areas. They have very heavy objects stored at head level that can become flying projectiles in an earthquake. If you are unsure about what to secure still, HT2 does offer a "safety walk" service wherein we will help you identify the items to be secured and offer suggestions for best solutions to secure the items. We even bring samples to share ideas and examples for your consideration. We do not partner with any vendors, thus the recommendations are based upon best judgement. We can even help with some installation needs.
As always we are here to support you in your preparedness efforts. Please contact us if you have any comments or questions. We would be happy to share more about our preparedness measures and/or schedule a presentation, safety walk, tabletop exercise, home consultation or general consultation with HT2, please Click Here!
